Would you like the bronze turtle to stay?
Dear residents and company representatives in Amsterdam Zuid,
The huge bronze turtle at the junction of the Apollolaan and the Beethovenstraat drew particular attention in recent months during ARTZUID 2011. This sculpture Searching for Utopia by Jan Fabre was a favourite of the public at the exhibition and has become the new attraction in Amsterdam that people are making special journeys to see and photograph.

A group of local residents think that it would be wonderful if this sculpture could be kept for the neighbourhood so that we could all continue to enjoy the turtle throughout the year. As a result, it has not been packed away and shipped home.
The owner has given Foundation ArtZuid time to collect money to purchase the sculpture and so we are calling on you, the residents and businesses of Amsterdam-Zuid. If every address gives €65, we would have enough.
Stichting ArtZuid has opened a special account for donations:

Initiative
In 2008, Cintha van Heeswijck took the initiative to draw greater attention to the urban expansion of the south of Amsterdam, known as the Plan-Zuid, designed by architect H.P. Berlage almost a hundred years ago. This world-class platform for sculpture adds a jewel to Amsterdam’s crown of leading cultural events.
Her Majesty Queen Beatrix opened the second edition of the international sculpture route of Amsterdam ARTZUID 2011 The world around, equality in diversity on 26 May 2011. Works were made available for the exhibition by various lenders and artists.
Stichting ArtZuid won the EUROPA NOSTRA AWARD in the education, training and awareness-raising category. This prestigious European heritage award was handed over by tenor Plácido Domingo, President of Europa Nostra, and Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Culture, Education, Multilingualism and Youth, in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam on 10 June 2011. Experts from the 27 member states of the European Union chose ARTZUID 2009 from 130 entries. They particularly praised the original way high quality art was used to generate attention for the exceptional Plan-Zuid district designed by architect H.P. Berlage. This area is recognised internationally as cultural heritage and studied by architects around the world. The fact that residents had taken the initiative themselves and the impact on the local community spirit were much admired. The accessible way children got to know cultural heritage and became aware of their environment through looking at sculptures was regarded as inventive.
